Exploring the History and Beauty of Piccolomini Castle
Located in the charming village of Capestrano, in the province of L’Aquila, Castello Piccolomini is a historic gem that captivates visitors with its majestic architecture and rich history intertwined with the region’s events.
Founded in the 15th century, the castle provides a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the medieval atmosphere and uncover the secrets of the past.
A Brief History of the Castle
The Piccolomini Castle of Capestrano owes its name to the noble family that owned it over the centuries, although it was later possessed by other families such as the Acquaviva, Celano, and Medici.
Built around 1485, the Castle has undergone various architectural transformations over the centuries, reflecting the tastes and needs of different eras. Restored in 1924, it lost much of its original structure.
It served as a residence for nobles and a strategic defense point, bearing witness to the struggles and historical dynamics that have shaped the Abruzzo region.
The Architecture and the Details
The architecture of Castello Piccolomini seamlessly blends medieval elements with Renaissance influences. The robust walls and watchtowers stand with grandeur, while the frescoes and interior furnishings narrate tales of luxury and power.
The castle consists of two “L”-shaped structures, with the main one facing southwest and overlooking the village square, while the other borders the inner courtyard to the northwest. The latter features a medieval tower on the northeast side.
The main façade is flanked by two round towers, and the entrance is surmounted by the Piccolomini coat of arms. The first floor showcases five Renaissance marble windows with pointed arches. The original entrance was located on the east side and was protected by a moat, with remains of the drawbridge and the ravelin still visible.
Within the courtyard, there is a 15th-century marble well at the center, surrounded by two columns with capitals. Stone staircases provide access to the upper floors from the courtyard.
